4 Reasons Why You’re Not Getting Cell Reception Underground

It’s always a little off-putting to be in a situation where you don’t have good cellular service, especially if you need to make a call. One of the most common places people lose signal is when they go underground, like in a car park or similar structure. No matter why you’re down there, here are four reasons why you’re not getting cell reception underground that you should be aware of.

1. Physical Distance

Physical distance from the source of a cellular signal will always be part of why you lose signal in any location. However, with underground areas, it's typically a combination of both vertical and horizontal distance, and that axis may cause additional problems when you're trying to connect.

2. Solid Obstructions

Perhaps the most notable reason you’re not getting cell reception underground is the presence of physical obstructions between you and the signal. Solid materials like concrete, metal, and the earth itself regularly block signals and make it more difficult to maintain a connection. Those blockades are vital to your safety when you're in an underground structure but make it difficult to maintain reception.

3. Your Service Provider

While not as common as some of the reasons above, sometimes the issue may be with your service provider. Every network has different coverage options; some may have a more challenging time reaching underground areas than others.

4. Lack of a Booster

Many underground structures get around some of the above problems by installing signal boosters. These helpful devices use interior and exterior antennas to strengthen weaker signals. If you’re underground and struggling to maintain a call, whoever owns the structure likely hasn’t installed a booster to enhance signals.
